The Story of the Angel Watcher

A man of science. A man of knowledge. A man of curiosity.

The Angel Watcher has spent his entire life in search of meaning.

He began with the hard sciences, mathematics, astronomy, the building blocks of the universe. Feeling somewhat unfulfilled however, he started studying the creative arts in his quest for universal clarity; literature, art, music, philosophy. He established himself as a true scholar, an expert in all fields, and developed a deeper understanding of the dynamics of beauty, emotion and other metaphysical, but equally important concepts.

But he was never satisfied. An insatiable thirst for knowledge proved too much, and he delved into the more obscure branches of knowledge. Mysticism, the paranormal, astronomy - all yielding no great return. In his constant pursuits, he distanced himself from the community, fading into obscurity, consumed by his desire to know the secrets of the universe.

Eventually, he grew old, and lost loves ones and colleagues to time. Before long he even lost his name, his identity. He was a fringe dweller, an outcast. No one knew who he was, or what he did. No one even noticed him anymore.

But he did not mind. It was better that way. He was free to be the observer he needed to be.

There came a point when this nameless, faceless old man realised there was only so much he could learn through books, and that to truly be able to understand the workings of the universe, he must simply observe the universe through his own eyes.

And it is through this observation that he discovered Angels. Not Angels in the sense of humanoids with flowing robes, wings and a devotion to a god in heaven. No, theses are the ethereal forces that act as the catalyst for the universe. They are the spark that started the big bang; they are the ideal conditions that spur new life on young planets; they are the stroke of genius that generates both invention and creation alike. They are emissaries of progress, messengers of the cosmos. They are all around, and nowhere at the same time.

And so he became the Angel Watcher. He sits and watches life pass by him, looking for Angels in the world around him. And he still reads his books, looking for Angels throughout history. And at the end of the day, the aging scholar documents his findings in massive tomes, to be discovered by no one in particular, to be read by anyone who might care, at a time long after his body, just like his name, has left this universe.
